Episode #10: Psychology of a Reader

What do readers look for and expect when they read a novel?

My first rejection for Astel was passive aggressive. It's out the door to another agent.

This week's exercice, describe a character in story form and keep that exercise around as we'll be doing a series of exercises that'll all work together into a short story.

Don't Use the Phone

Short Fiction by J.R. Murdock.

This story started out with a title and a character consisting of three different co-workers of mine. I had no idea where this story was going to go when I'd written it. This story was a runner up in a Short Story contest at Jerry Jazz Musician. This is one of few fiction pieces I've written that aren't genre related in any way. Sometimes your mind wanders and you must follow where it takes you.

Me, Myself, and I...and I...and I

Short Fiction by J.R. Murdock.

I'm not sure what spurred me to write this story, but those who have read it have said 'that reminds me of 'this' story or 'that' story and I've gone off and read those stories. And yes, it's been done before. I submitted this to Mur's 'crit contest' at I Should Be Writing. She liked it, I hope you will as well.

A Day in the Life of Ken Zombie

Short Fiction by J.R. Murdock.

I sat down and watched Shaun of the Dead and I couldn't help but think "What if a Zombie was a contributing member of society?" So I wrote this story to find just that out.

This story appeared in Quantum Muse. I actually got my first comment from someone I didn't know who said 'Thank you for bringing a smile to my day'. I hope it brings a smile to your day as well.
